Our Athlete of the Month for February is probably our most ADVENTUROUS ATHLETE – Josh Houska!
Our Athlete of the Month for February is probably our most ADVENTUROUS ATHLETE – Josh Houska! Trust me, you’ll want to read his answers to see the thrills he’s had.
At the end of this month he will start his climb of Mt Rainier! Wait though, he’s already climbed Kilimanjaro in Africa and hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu! Josh is dedicated to his health & fitness and intentional in putting in extra work – can you say strict pull-ups! We are so proud of him and look forward to cheering him on in all his crazy-fun-unbelievable-thrill seeking adventures!
1. What’s your athletic background?
I played tennis and hockey in high school and 2 years of tennis in college. I still play in a tennis league but it’s not nearly as competitive.
2. When did you start working out at CrossFit Osiris?
July 2018.
3. What keeps you coming back?
The community and the challenge of the workouts. There is a sense of accomplishment after a hard workout and its nice surrounding yourself with people who want you to succeed.
4. If you could write the WOD, what would it be?
I’m assuming no one wants to climb stairs for a few hours with me so… I liked this WOD we did a few months ago, a 24min EMOM with min 1 being 10 power cleans at 135/95, min 2 – 10 hollow rocks, and min 3 – 15/13 Cals row.
5. What are some of your goals, fitness or personal?
I have been training for my climb for the last 9 months so that has been a big goal. I’ve slowly worked my way up to the average pack weight and distance I will see on my climb (50lbs and 5k’ elevation gain in a day). When I’m done I’d like to work on various CrossFit movements like learning how to do toes to bar, double-unders, and get better at snatches.
6. List one or two improvements you have seen in your life since starting CrossFit.
I’ve started to eat healthier and stretching more. With all the energy I put into working out 6 days a week, I need to make sure to take care of my body.
7. How do you like to spend your free time?
I like backpacking on the north shore, playing tennis, reading, and skydiving. Which is something everyone should try!
8. What’s your favorite cheat meal?
Definitely deserts! My Mom makes the best deserts and likes to share recipes.
9. What would you say to someone thinking about starting CrossFit?
Anyone can do it because there is a modification for everything. I modify most workouts and it has gotten me to a point where I can go climb a fricken mountain!
10. Anything else you’d like to share about yourself?
I’ve skydived 77 times over the last 3 years and am hoping to break 100 this summer! I also program robots for a living which is pretty cool!
11. How often do you attend?
In my last month of training I’ll be at the box 3 days a week and on the stair master for 3 more. Once I’m done with my climb I plan on getting back to 5 days a week at the gym.
12. What class time do you typically attend?
I am a 5:30am-er and 3:30pm-er depending on my schedule.
